What are you idiots doing?

As I sit here deciding what to write on a blog that no one is going to read, I'm pondering the question: "Why are we doing this?" The best answer I can come up with is "Why Not?"

Pat and Matt back in 2019 for My Team Triumph with Captain Dakota

So what are we doing? Pat and I are giving SwimRun a full go effort in 2023 to see how close or if we could possibly qualify for the Otillo SwimRun World Championship in Stockhold, Sweden at some point. I mean, why have a small reasonable goal when you can just go for something seemingly insane? 40 miles of trails, rocks, roots, and other nasty treats plus 6.2 miles of swimming in the Baltic? I mean doesn't that sound fun!

Check out this hype video for the race and try not to get pumped.

Seems pretty stupid to think you could qualify for a WC when you're just a couple old swimmers, right? I mean we've done one SwimRun so far at about the nadir of our fitness and it was one of the most fun races I've ever done. Even though I totally cracked, it was just such a fun atmosphere and great vibe, we definitely wanted to do more of it. Also, a goal is just a great way to motivate yourself to get back in shape and do the work. We've got goals to force our Dad bods into some sort of shape again and see what we can do! Probably won't make it, but its about the journey. At 45 I'm not getting younger and with Pat approaching 40 it seems like now is the time to go for it. SwimRun is still pretty niche, but its growing fast and we hope to be a part of it and maybe, just maybe sneak ourselves into the WCs!

The "Plan"

We are currently planning on doing SwimRun Lake James in April and SwimRun Casco Bay in July as both are merit races and we will see what we can do against the big boys and girls! The great thing about SwimRun is that men's teams, co-ed teams, and women's teams are all out there, anything goes. We got so much great information already from the Low Tide Boyz podcasts where they literally provide you all the information you could possibly want on SwimRun and some you might not! They are very entertaining! We've already started fan-boying on some of the other Swim runners in the states and oversees. Hoping to meet and learn from a lot of these folks as we begin the journey.

Fools in action in front of the bridge

The SwimRun community is just so much fun and seems so inviting. We've been following Team Adorkable on their blog. Their journey to do the recently completed World Championship was inspiring to follow this summer after hearing about them on Low Tide Boyz and listening to their course preview of Mackinac Island that we just completed. Hope to meet them and just tell them how attainable they make the sport seem and how inviting it is.

We will still be doing Triathlons and such, but putting a lot of effort into SwimRun. I've still got at least one more Ironman in me, I would assume Pat has several. The first thing the both of us have to do is shake the COVID side effects (we both finally got in the past 6 weeks), lose weight, and get healthy. Easy right? I've lost this same 20 lbs at least 6 times, so its like kicking out your buddy who was fun for awhile, but time to move on.

I promise to try to keep whoever reads this entertained with the moronic stuff we do and the many mistakes and life lessons we learn. We aren't people who take ourselves very seriously in this, but we do like a good challenge and always willing to laugh at ourselves!

Get the coffee in!
